In oral sex, my partner says I taste bad. Help!

As we reach midlife, the tastes of vaginas and penises can intensify. Our smells are different than our younger years. If we are used to another partner, there may be an expectation that you should taste and smell like that former partner. Let go of that one, for sure! Everyone tastes different, just as everyone looks different. I will quickly add that most partners are not put off by our odors and flavors. In fact, they find their special person’s vaginal aroma (or that musky smell of the penis) and taste to be an aphrodisiac at any age, just as Napoleon did. Having said that, what can we do if our partner is put off by our smell or taste? Check out what’s off putting about it. For men: It’s usually a cleanliness factor. If you have a foreskin, be sure you have washed under it so there is no bacterial build up. Remember that having your hands on your penis throughout the day when you urinate can transfer whatever is on your hands to your penis (garlic, sweaty gloves, surfaces you have touched, etc). If you know you are going to have oral sex with your partner, wash your penis, scrotum, the anus, and the whole area for your partners pleasure. Your natural odor will linger, believe me. For women: Your partner needs to understand that the vulva and vagina are actually very clean places to hang out, even without bathing. Washing up just before sex might reduce some of the natural odors. (Don’t douche unless a doctor suggests it. First of all, it tastes terrible immediately afterward. And, it violently interrupts the Ph balance.) Be sure a yeast infection is not at work. Check out my blog on the taste of a woman. In any case, talk to your partner before you set out on your sexual escapade. Possibly, he/she doesn’t like performing cunnilingus/fellatio in the first place! If that’s the case, probe to find out why. He/she may be missing out on great fun based on a story that just isn’t true.
